ILD& connective tissue disease

Intersticial lung disease (ILD) is a common manifestation of connective tissue disease

(CTD) and one of the most serious complications that can lead to significant morbidity

and mortality.

ILD can be present in most types of CTD including Rheumatoid arthritis, Scleroderma,

Systemic lupus erythematosus, Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis, Sjogren´s

syndrome and Mixed connective tissue disease, but its prevalence varies among the

different entities. Although it is generally thought that ILD develops later on CTD it can

be the initial presentation.

Multidisciplinary discussion is very important for the diagnosis and treatment of ILD

associated with CTD, especially when CTD is suspected but cannot be diagnosed

using strict criteria. The challenge is even bigger when we have to exclude other factor

like comorbid conditions, infections and adverse effects of treatments used in this

diseases.
